(Kālasaṅkalita p. 353); its place is 60° or 62° N., the longi-

tude of its circle of declination, according to different authori-

ties, is 265°, 266° 40’, or 268° (Colebr. Ess. II. p. 341).

3. n. (-त् (-t)) ¹ (scil. नक्षत्र (nakṣatra)) The name of the twenty-

second Nakshatra or asterism, consisting of three stars

figured as a triangle; it does not occupy an equal portion

of the ecliptic with the other twenty-six Nakshatras, but

is carved out of the contiguous divisions (comp. Col. Ess.

II. p. 341); viz. it is inserted sometimes between the twenty-

first (Pūrvāṣāḍhā) and twenty-third asterism (Śravaṇā),

in which case it takes 3°20' from the former and 1° 40’

from the latter, thus consisting of 5°; it is chiefly used for

astrological purposes (Kālasaṅkalita p. 353 &c.); to be born

under it is auspicious (Koṣṭīpradīpa, as quoted by Rādhāk.:

स्यादभिजिति यदि सूतिर्भूपतिः स्ववंशे (syādabhijiti yadi sūtirbhūpatiḥ svavaṃśe)); it is sacred to Vidhi

or (the masc.) Brahman. ² The eighth Muhūrta, the period
