8 (In Rhet.) The last of the three main divisions of Kāvya (poetry). It is of two kinds शब्दचित्र (śabdacitra) and अर्थ-वाच्य-चित्र (artha-vācya-citra), and the poetical charm lies mainly in the use of figures of speech dependent on the sound or sense of words. Mammaṭa thus defines it: -शब्दचित्र (śabdacitra)ं वाच्यचित्रमव्यंग्यं त्ववरं स्मृतं (śabdacitraṃ vācyacitramavyaṃgyaṃ tvavaraṃ smṛtaṃ) Kāvyaprakāśa 1. As an instance of शब्दचित्र (śabdacitra) may be cited the following verse from R. G. मित्रात्रिपुत्रनेत्राय त्रयीशात्रवशत्रवे । (mitrātriputranetrāya trayīśātravaśatrave .) गोत्रारिगोत्रजैत्राय गोत्रात्रे ते नमो नमः ॥ (gotrārigotrajaitrāya gotrātre te namo namaḥ ..).
