PrivacySanskrit Lexicon Privacy Policy
Sanskrit Lexicon (the “App”) respects your privacy. This notice explains what information the App does not collect, how any iCloud-synced data is handled by Apple, what the App sends in order to look up a word, and your choices.
Last updated: 9 September 2026
1. We don't collect personal data
- The App creates no user accounts, runs no third-party analytics or advertising SDKs, and never tracks you.
- The developer receives no personally identifiable information from the App. Apple's App Privacy label for Sanskrit Lexicon reads Data Not Collected.
2. What the App sends to look up a word
- The dictionary of 250,000+ headwords lives on a server rather than inside the App. When you search, the App sends the text you typed to that server and receives the matching entries. When you use Search by Context, the App sends your context description and the word's identifier so the server can rank the definitions.
- These requests are not tied to an account, a name or an advertising identifier, and are used only to answer the request.
- Words you open are cached on your device so they can be opened again without a connection.
3. Local and iCloud storage
- Favorites, recent words, notes, custom categories and the day's word are stored locally on your device.
- If you enable iCloud, Apple's CloudKit service syncs this data to your other devices signed in with the same Apple Account, in your private iCloud database.
- iCloud data is encrypted in transit and at rest. The developer cannot access this content.
- The free tier's daily search count is stored only on the device and is never synced or sent anywhere.
4. Purchases and notifications
- Unlimited plans are sold and processed entirely by Apple through the App Store. The developer receives only Apple's aggregate sales reports, which do not identify individual customers.
- If you start a free trial, the App may ask permission to send one local notification two days before the trial ends. Local notifications are scheduled on the device; no push server is involved.
5. Siri, Shortcuts, Spotlight and the widget
Siri and Shortcuts requests are handled on your device and, for a lookup, sent to the dictionary server exactly as an in-app search would be. Spotlight indexing of your saved words happens on device and is visible only to you. The widget reads the day's word from storage shared between the App and the widget on your device.
6. Compliance with privacy regulations
Because we collect no personal data, the App satisfies the core principles of multiple privacy frameworks, including but not limited to:
| Regulation | How we comply |
|---|---|
| GDPR (EU) | No personal data is processed. You can delete all local data by removing the App, or disable iCloud sync at any time. |
| CCPA / CPRA (California) | We do not sell or share personal information. |
| CalOPPA (California) | This publicly available policy discloses our data practices in full. |
| Other jurisdictions | The no-data-collected model aligns with equivalent privacy laws worldwide. |
7. Children's privacy
The App is rated 4+ and is not directed to children under 13. It purposely collects no data from anyone, of any age. If you believe a minor has provided data, please contact us so we can delete it.
8. Your choices
- Disable iCloud for the App at any time in Settings › your name › iCloud › Show All › Sanskrit Lexicon. Data will then remain only on your device.
- Delete all local data by uninstalling the App; iOS, iPadOS and macOS erase its documents and databases automatically.
- Data already synced to iCloud can be removed in Settings › your name › iCloud › Manage Account Storage.
9. Links to other services
The App does not embed third-party web content but may open links to external websites for reference. In particular, Scholar definitions link to the Cologne Digital Sanskrit Lexicon, which hosts the digitised editions of the dictionaries that power the App, and the App may recommend the SanskritTypist keyboard on the App Store.
10. This website
sanskritlexicon.com is a static site. It sets no cookies, runs no analytics or tracking scripts, and does not build a profile of visitors. Your light-or-dark choice is stored in your own browser's local storage and never leaves your device. No fonts or scripts are loaded from third parties.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this notice if our data practices change. We will post any new version at this address and revise the “last updated” date. Any change that involved collecting data would also be reflected in the App Privacy label on the App Store.
